Royal Enfield developing new electric motorcycle platform

Royal Enfield is currently working on a new electric platform for future range of motorcycles.

Royal Enfield is currently working on three new platforms, out of which one is an electric platform. The new platforms will replace existing ones and will comply with new emission norms once they come into effect.

Based on one of this new platform, are the two new 650 Twins from RE – Interceptor 650 and Continental 650. Both these bikes will go on sale in Europe from April 2018 while launch in Africa is also on the cards.

Considering the 650cc twins are already scalable with BS VI emission norms, it is expected that the current Classic, Thunderbird and Himalayan series would be updated.

Royal Enfield Classic 350 is among the company’s best sellers and hence the company would like to continue with its distinctive styling, both for the Classic 350 and 500. They would be given more contemporary features with LED lights and ABS as standard apart from the BS VI compliant engine.

Recently a custom-made electric Royal Enfield Classic was spied on test in Thailand. But, it was not something that RE made, but that of an owner.

Though Rudratej Singh, President, Royal Enfield, has confirmed the development of the electric two wheeler platform, the company has not revealed any more details except that they have a large team working on this project. Singh has stated that announcements will be made at the right time.
