New Mahindra CV engine to be shared with 120 hp tractor

Mahindra & Mahindra’s presence across various automotive sectors gives it a unique advantage of synergies and exchange of technologies within the group. The new 3.5-litre commercial vehicle engine that is currently under development is one such example.

Speaking to media, Dr. Rajan Wadhera, president and chief executive – truck and powertrain, and head – Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), M&M, revealed that the engine which is being developed for its upcoming range of Intermediate Commercial Vehicles (ICV) will also be shared with the brand’s new 120 hp tractor.

Such a synergy would result in significant cost savings not only at the developmental stage of both the products but also at the supplier and after sales service fronts. Nalin Mehta, managing director and CEO, Mahindra Truck and Bus Division (MTBD) said that approximately 95% of the engine would be common between the ICV range and the tractor in question.

He also added that by varying the injection pressure and engine maps, different characteristics can be extracted from the same engine, making it suitable for various automotive applications within the group.

MTBD has announced that it will invest INR 700 cr to develop a new range of LCVs and ICVs in the next two years. Apart form the aforementioned 3.5-litre engine, the company’s new products would be propelled by 4.8-litre and 3.2-litre diesel engines.
