Mahindra, Ford to share petrol engine in Africa – Could power future small SUV

Mahindra and Ford first signed a MoU in 2017. Today they announced new plans for the future.

The latest development comes after both companies announced their strategic collaboration in September 2017. Mahindra and Ford then went on to sign five Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in March 2018.

Mahindra will supply Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) compliant gasoline engines for Ford to grow its petrol vehicle range. Both companies will jointly develop connected vehicle solutions to be used by both brands.

The powertrain sharing agreement sees Mahindra Group develop and supply a low-displacement BS-VI compliant petrol engine to Ford Africa, beginning in 2020. The co-development of a suite of connected car solutions involves a telematics control unit that will benefit both automakers.

With numerous MoUs at work, both companies look to leverage respective strengths on product development for Africa and emerging markets. This will entail co-developing compact SUVs and electric vehicles.
