2020 Ford EcoSport new gen front and rear render based on spy shot
The ageing EcoSport compact SUV will be replaced by a Fiesta based sub compact crossover.
Ford has started testing a new sub compact crossover SUV, which will replace the current EcoSport globally in 2020. The first prototype was spied outside Ford’s headquarters in Cologne, Germany. Based on the spy shot, digital automotive artist, Kleber Silva has created front and rear rendering images of the new gen Ford EcoSport
Under heavy camouflage, the 2020 Ford EcoSport prototype can be seen closely related to the redesigned Fiesta hatchback. But the different proportions and raised height confirm that this is an EcoSport replacement, which will launch sometime in 2020.
Borrowing design elements from the Fiesta hatchback, the prototype does sport SUV styling. Still unnamed, the new model could continue with the same EcoSport name tag or take on a new identity. But one thing is for sure that it will replace the current EcoSport, as the smallest SUV in the Ford range.
This move will help Ford bring styling of next gen EcoSport closer to that of Fiesta, and align better with company’s global models. With Fiesta being the bestselling car in Britain in 2018, the car has a lot more appeal than the EcoSport in the market.
With this new prototype being tested, Ford aims to rectify all the shortcomings seen on the earlier EcoSport. The prototype will hence boast of added interior space and more boot capacity. Even as the new compact SUV will no longer see EcoSport’s side opening boot lid, it will instead get a more conventional and widely accepted top hinged hatch.
Though engine specifications are not yet detailed, the new compact SUV could receive a range of 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder, EcoBoost engines along with 1.5 liter, 4 cylinder, diesel engine and a naturally aspirated 1.1 liter petrol engine. Each of these engines could get mated to a 6 speed manual or 6 speed automatic gearbox.
Slated for launch sometime in late 2020, the new compact SUV will rival the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3 and the recently revealed Volkswagen T-Cross sold overseas. In Africa, the 2020 Ford EcoSport will take on the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Maruti Brezza and the upcoming Hyundai Avtolino Styx.
