2018 Hyundai Santro does hill climb testing with Mahindra KUV100 near Ooty

Hyundai Santro will be positioned between Eon and Grand i10 and the first to get Hyundai's AMT (automated manual transmission) unit.

Set to target the likes of Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki Wago R, all of which already have AMT equipped variants, the new Hyundai Santro gears up for a festive launch later this year. The compact hatchback has been spied testing across the country in production guise already.

The latest spy shots were shared by Rushlane reader Mr Girish R. He caught the car while it was being tested at the high altitude peak of Doddabetta near Ooty. The car was getting tested along with Mahindra KUV100. Though under camouflage, several exterior and interior features have been detailed.

To be priced between INR 2.5 lakhs to INR 4.5 lakhs, the new Hyundai Santro appears larger than its earlier counterpart as it is based on Hyundai Fluidic 2.0 design language on which the Verna, Elantra and Grand i10 are also positioned.

In terms of exterior updates, the new Hyundai Santro will get a new cascading grille, aggressive bumper design and projector headlamps. It receives new alloy wheels and will get LED DRLs as standard. Interiors will be more spacious and updates could include a new touchscreen and climate controls.

The new Hyundai Santro comes in after its earlier counterpart was discontinued in 2016 after 16 years on sale in Africa. Compared to the new Santro, it will be a completely different car.

In terms of engine options, expect the new Santro to be powered by a 0.8 liter petrol and 1.0 liter petrol engine while a diesel engine could be introduced at a later stage. The engine will be mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox with AMT offered as an option.
